ChatGPT Glitch Exposes Private Chats To Random Users

Users of ChatGPT have raised concerns about a glitch that has led to other users’ chat histories appearing in their accounts. This issue poses a severe threat to the privacy and security of the widely used AI tool.

Typically, the ChatGPT interface includes a sidebar displaying the user’s previous conversations, which are visible only to that user. However, several individuals have reported seeing other users’ chat histories accessible by strangers with different accounts without taking any special actions. One user indicated they could only view the chat titles, not the entire conversation log.

OpenAI, a research and development company specializing in machine learning, released ChatGPT in November 2022. As a large language model trained on the entirety of the internet’s contents, it became extremely popular. In February, OpenAI launched a subscription plan called ChatGPT Plus, priced at $20 monthly.

According to the ChatGPT FAQ page, OpenAI uses conversations to train the system, and “AI trainers” review those conversations as part of the process. “As part of our commitment to safe and responsible AI, we review conversations to improve our systems and to ensure the content complies with our policies and safety requirements,” the FAQ states.

The ChatGPT FAQ advises users, “Please don’t share any sensitive information in your conversations.”

OpenAI has been vocal about its commitment to safety standards while developing AI. However, ChatGPT, which recently set a record for being one of the fastest-growing consumer applications in history, with 100 million monthly active users two months after its launch, has consistently been unreliable in the accuracy of its responses. Individuals have manipulated ChatGPT to promote r*cism and conspiracy theories and even engage in role-playing scenarios involving s*xualizing children.

Apart from this, Judges are using ChatGPT to make decisions, tech startups have relied on it for code writing, and the Pentagon has employed it for crafting press releases.
